Travel options to and around Ko Samui
Direct flights from Bangkok depart frequently during the peak season. A
much cheaper option is to take a sleeper train from the capital to
Suratthani, and then a ferry to Nathon. Tickets to cover all parts of your
trip are available at the Hualumpong, Bangkok's central train station. You
can also take airconditioned or non-airconditioned buses, which typically
take twelve hours to get to the ferry port.
A shuttle service runs between the piers, the airport, and the hotels.
Full-service hotels can arrange for your transfers and your tours.
Metered taxis are available in Samui's towns. Songthaew or pickup trucks
operate like mini-buses and are handy for getting around. Bikes and
motorbikes can be rented and taken to all points of the island. Thailand
drives on the left, but watch out for visiting motorists unfamiliar with
the rules.
Boats connect Ko Samui to the neighbouring islands, but service can be
disrupted by the moonsoon winds from October to December. |
