Head Out to Ko Samui!
Ko Samui (transcriptions into English also spell it Koh Samui) is a resort island in the Gulf of Thailand. Ko (or Koh) simply means "island" in Thai, but the origins of Samui are more elusive. It's been said the word may have descended from "Sabouey", a word in Chinese that means safe harbour.
A calm spot would be amongst the last things to expect in Ko Samui these days, though. With the second largest number of vacationers next to perennial superlative tourist magnet Phuket, Ko Samui is packed with excitement for backpackers, divers, spa enthusiasts and adventure travellers.
Often, you might feel like you're in a lively little city, with signboards, coffee shops, eateries, all sorts of shopping and inns jostling for space in Ko Samui's larger towns. A feisty nightlife is what brings large crowds to Samui, out to enjoy music of all genres or perhaps enormous raves, free-flowing drinks and cuisines!
A large and active multi-national expat community is connected to the rest of Thailand and the world through the island's own international airport. If you're the type looking for tropical simplicity though, get ready to walk further around the island, away from the tourist hotspots.
Once an island that thrived on coconuts and fish, Koh Samui opened to the world when a boatload of Western backpack trekkers arrived around forty years ago and discovered sandy beaches, adventure-filled jungle treks and quiet Thai towns, each with a unique character.
Word of mouth anecdotes from those who came and went paved the way to rave reviews in travel guides and a steady influx of tourists over the years. Still, your stay here can be marked with a taste of the island's original lychees, pineapples and other local fruits.
The people of Koh Samui are warm and take pride in their island, and they speak a distinct southern Thai dialect, althoughworking migrants from Thailand's northeast plateau and Bangkok are changing the island's cultural balance. In short, you'll discover a cross section of Thailand here in Ko Samui, minus Bangkok's chaotic streets.
On the next section, see a sampling of Koh Samui's delights!
